I think once it has started the only thing you can do is exfoliate and moisturise like mad to make it go away quicker than it would naturally. However, to prevent it in the first place, try a good quality Aloe vera gel slathered generously over the area when you have come out of the sun. It is a brilliant aftersun, and really takes the heat out of sun burnt skin.

Are you drinking plenty of water? Dehydration can happen quickly. If you drink caffienated or alcoholic drinks, you need more water to offset the dehydrating effects.
You can try this inexpensive scrub, it may help.
Pour table salt into a lidded container. Add oil to the salt and stir until it is evenly distributed. I like my mixture a little on the liquid side. It will settle when it sits, just mix it up again. After you shower, scoop some out and gently rub in on your wet skin, then rinse it off. I like to use olive oil, but any kind will do, even mineral oil. Keep the lid on so it won't dry out. If you scrub too hard, it can hurt.
We also buy plain shea butter(Earthfare) for my son, who has excema. It really seems to help.

*How to Exfoliate Your Body for Soft Skin*
Exfoliate your dead, rough skin with your own very inexpensive body scrub. Your skin will be soft, touchable and glowing!
Steps
Squeeze the juice of one lemon and mix it with ½ C sugar
Get in the bath tub to avoid messing up your floor.
Apply the sugar paste to your skin and massage in circular motion.
Start at your ankles and work your way up.
Rinse it off in the shower.
Apply body lotion right after your shower, to keep the moisture in.
Tips
This will not only exfoliate your dead, flaky skin, but it also stimulate your circulation. That's why we start at the ankles.
Warnings
It is not recommended to use it on your face, as it is too abrasive.
Things You'll Need
1 lemon
1/2 C granulated sugar

Er.. prevention is better than cure.
Use SUN CREAM next time.
For now though all you can do is let it peel , but keep it moisturised with some after sun lotion. You can't stop it from coming off, you've already fried and killed it so its dead skin.
That sort of carelessness is what gives people skin cancer.
RESPECT THE SUN! It's much bigger than you.

there is nothing you can really do about peeling except to keep moisturising and not to take hot showers/baths after being in the sun.

Don't think there is a lot you can do.apart from moisturising cream because we shed the top layer of skin constantly,it just looks worse when we have a tan.
