Even though they're considered freshwater lakes, it goes without saying that there is some level of dissolved salts in the water, but not enough to make it salty like seawater.
Also, contrary to some opinions here, they're not the world's largest freshwater lakes. Lake Baikal, in the Russian Far East, is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. Its surface area maybe smaller but it holds a lot more water.

The Great Lakes are considered fresh water lakes. Though since they open into the ocean through a series of waterways, I would imagine there to be some salt in them. It could also have been other minerals, etc floating around in the water that made it taste salty. And no, they're usually not very warm.

The Great Lakes are fresh water. Although they connect to salt water (via the St. Lawrence river), the flow is from the lakes to the ocean, so ocean salt cannot reach the lakes. They have a very small amount of salt from elution of salt in soils adjoining tributaries of the lakes, but it can only be detected by careful chemical analysis.

They are fresh water lakes. The largest in the world.
They would have a salt content, like most water found in nature, but they are referred to as fresh-water lakes.
