If I'm lucky, I'll get 1 out of every 50 disks. The computer says the others are not writeable. I'm using Memorex CDs and DVDs in my Memorex burner. I can watch movies and download frames, but I'm having problems getting them onto a blank CD.

No sarcastic or stupid answers, please! Thanks.

My Gateway computer is 8 years old, but I had the burner installed less than a year ago. I am not putting in an overload of files to burn, it just won't accept them. I copied some about a week ago, no problem. But that was one out of many disks. All this installing and reinstalling is too complicating to me. I have learning difficulties, especially "Go to" and "do this."
I'm not getting the where or how to find out where. I'm fed up with depending on people to come over to the house and what appears easy to them is not explained to me. I am trying everyone's advice and I really do appreciate each one!!!!

Buy TDK. Memorex is NOT an A-brand.
The laser lens might be dirty.
There are special cleaning CD's or you could open up the player (if you'r handy).

Well, 1 out of 50! This is a tuff one for some reason. But if you are sure the CD's/DVD's are blank. And get an error msg saying the disks are not writable. Then I would have to suspect that your burner is failing or maybe have a glitch in the burners firmware programming. So I suggest you go the the manufacturers website and look for firmware updates for your burner model #. If there is a newer firmware version available read the update directions very carefully. Go slow, one step at a time, and the update process should be fairly simple. The main thing to worry about when updating firmware is to not loose power during this process. Do not shut down the PC for any reason during this process or your burner will be destroyed. Firmware is just a little chip on your burner that is reprogrammable(flashable), but it controls everything your burner does. It is your burners brains. One more thing, could it be something as simple as a dirty lens? Try a CD/DVD lens cleaner, you can get these at Wal-Mart, or BestBuy, Circuit city.

To locate the burners current firmware version, may be difficult unless you have a system info tool.
Go here and download Nero Info Tool, unless you are using Nero see if Nero Info Tool is included. Mine is located under Nero Toolkit. Other burning software may also include an Info Tool.
Download free:

For Nero Info Tool you will find firmware version on the Drive tab, if you have two CD/DVD drives make sure you are looking at the right one, info for both drives will be displayed in this window but not at the same time. You can change drives in the drop-down box located at the top. I hope this has helped more than confused you. I warned you at the begining of my answer this is a tuff one, now you know why. Best of luck to you. If you need further help in understanding what I have told you, please feel free to email or im me.

Uh-Oh!! Sounds like you need a new drive!! How old is it? Has it been used alot since you got it? Those are all factors, although it may be your burning software. Lemme know some more details.

too many factors, need more details.

are you trying to put too much information on your cd... shouldn't e more than 700Mb...maybe even 600 depending on your disks.

or try to reinstall your software or use something different like NERO.

hope this helps
