Neither, it was a Pagan holiday that the early Christians incorporated into their holidays. The story is that Roman Soldiers were not allowed to get married. The Catholic Church said all sex had to be married sex. No way are the soldiers gonna give it up, and no way are the girls gonna have sex without marriage so Saint Valentine married them against Roman Law so that they would be OK with God. He was killed for his trouble and that is what made him a Saint.
