Never rush yourself to tampons.
Rather use it only for swimming.
It is not good for "down there". It builds up all the liquid for the time being in there and that liquids causes infections which could lead to big problems (one day). For example cervical cancer and cancer to the ovaries. Also research has shown that tampons contain a material that causes cancer to your insides. Please be careful. PS - I'm speaking from experience.

Some of you people have no idea what you are talking about. Listen, Talia tampons are not as spooky and bad as some make it to be. As long as you take them out every 8 hrs minimum you will be fine. I am 20 and have been using tampons for 3 yrs straight. Honestly I love them over pads. With pads the wetness feels worse. Also depending on the amount you bleed u might change them as often as a pad so no worries there.
When inserting a tampon find your vaginal opening which is a little lower than ur urethra opening, push in the applicator (use plastic cardboard sux), then push the part with the string hanging out of it until all you can see is the string hanging down (u will need the string to pull it out l8r) then slide the plastic out and toss it. The tampon will open up inside you to accomodate the blood and when it is full u will feel it like a pad. As for the hymen issue I wouldnt worry about that too much. If you insert it correctly and slowly it shouldn't hurt to put it in so most likely you wont break ur hymen. When inserting it you should squat or stand with legs spread as these are the more comfortable positions. It might feel weird for the first few times because youll feel like u have a rod in you but over enough uses u might forget u have one in there lol! When removing just tug at the string until it comes out. This is where it might hurt a bit it depends on the person and the absorbency of the tampon used. I recommend starting with the playtex gentleglide slimfits until you get used to them. From there if u need more absorbency then u can go for supers or super pluses (I'd hold off on those till later as they hurt the most when removing). And girls in general, using a tampon does not mean youve lost youre virginity ok? That is a common misconception.
Talia if you have anymore questions about tampons just post another message and I will be glad to tell you what i can ok? Good luck with them!

Oh no... I know people are just trying to help but please use common sense and judge each aspect of each answer accordingly, even mine.
First of all, you CAN NOT get cancer from tampons. Those materials are everyday materials in everyday things that you can not avoid anyway, and what research? there isn't a single respectable science or research journal out there that shows any possibility of tampons giving you cancer. That's a wives's tale at best.
Secondly, if you follow the directions on the tampon box, you'd know that it should be changed every 3 to 5 hours. If you do that, tampons are perfectly safe and harmless.
I for one prefer tampons. pads feel like diapers to me. yuck. since I've started using tampons, I'll never go back. I recommend still using one at night (sleep tends to last longer that 5 hours after all). I take the risk and have a tampon in the 8 hours of my sleep, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should. Better safe than sorry.
If you have one in for too long (like a 24 hour period), you may likely die. Too much bacteria will be trapped in your uterus, and you know how bacteria multiplies rapidly in wet warm places... if you feel ready or comfortable enough for the responsibility of remembering to change your tampon within 5 hours ALWAYS, then that's the one most important indicator of whether or not your old enough for tampons. Responsibility and maturity is always a better indicator than years of age.
I remember the first time I attempted to insert one. I failed. The embarrassing part is that i never had a cherry and i masturbated sometimes, so i of all people should have known! The very top end of it, with the sharp ridges an all, hurt me. It is a sensitive area. Just know the pain isn't seriously hurting anything. It's really not that bad. You'll be fine. If you fail the first time, try again when your up to it. you'll get it.

:) it's a little uncomfortable until you put it in right... you may waist several trying to get it right, don't worry about that.
you are old enough to use a tampon when you are mature enough to read the warnings and know how important it is to change them often. so, when you think you're ready.
i'm hoping you have tampax brand... or at least one that has a sliding, two piece applicator. hold the applicator at the center (where the two pieces come together) and insert it upwards until your fingers that hold the applicator touch your vaginal opening. it sounds easier than it is. some girls need to stand while doing this and lift one foot to have it rest on the tub, or the toilet seat in order to get the right angle for the tampon to go upwards. THEN, push the two parts of the applicator together... and now, just the string should be hanging out. if you can feel the applicator AT ALL, it's in wrong... pull the string, throw that one away, try again. my oldest daughter actually wore them when they "hurt" for a whole day because she was convinced it couldn't get comfortable to the point that you don't even know it's there... BUT, if you keep practicing it WON'T feel like it's there.
good luck :)

Well congrats! Your finally a woman. If you choose to use tampons, you should read the instructions enclosed in the box(which is really simple to insert, you shouldn't feel it if it's in right), but if this is your first period, you should use the slender ones from tampax or regulars, and don't keep them in for a long time, depending on your flow, 4 hrs is good, but if your bleeding too much for a regular in 4 hrs, then you need to get the heavy ones and get the flushable applicators cause it's gross to see another womens sanitaries in the trash all bloody and stuff. P.s - Shower EVERYDAY while on your period. and try and use pads at night.

the best person to ask about how old you should be to use one is your doctor, but what i do is put the aplicator just a litting in and slide the tampon in, and no it doesnt hurt, it might be a bit uncomfortable the first or second time you use it, but it shouldnt hurt, and be careful not to wear it too long, you could get tss

you can be any age to use them. Well i'm not 20 but started my period when i was 12 i had the same question as you and my mom told me that the easiest way to insert them is to put one leg on top of the toilet and insert the tampon
