Perfect idea! Instead of using mice, rats, and monkeys for medical research, we should use prison's full of rapists, murderers, and gang members for our research needs. God knows we have an unending supply of them!

The first answer is the most correct so far. It's not necessarily about sex, it's about control. This is why anyone can be a rape victim, and why sometimes in war, members of an army will sodomize captured enemy soldiers (or rape civilian women). The main goal is dominance, and sex is the method used to achieve it.

And what do you mean by "using rapists for research"?

I think it's an excellent idea. Rape is all about uncontrolled powerplay and a lack of empathy against the victim. Research should be done into this and if during the resreach the rapist gets damaged beyond repair so much the better.
