13 or 14, We have our periods because the lining in our uterus thickens every month to get ready for an egg to attach(get pregnant) but if no egg attaches then it sheds and starts all over again. Simply like it. I knew exactly what was happening and what to do cause I read up on it (puberty)every chance I could cause I was very shy about asking and there was nothing like this when I was 13/14., but I think you should read up on it or talk to someone you trust. But now that you have your period, you run the chance of getting pregnant, so you should think about getting on the pill and using condoms EVERY TIME you have sex. A minute in the sack isn't worth a lifetime of stress... seriously (P.S - Don't be so embarrassed about getting your period we all get it ((talking about the tracker))

I had just turned 15! I thought something was wrong with me till I started. I'm 33 now with 3 children. I hope you aren't considering sex yet. In the middle of your menstrual cycle is when you're most likely to get pregnant, but can at ANY time even using contraceptives if you're having sex.

i had my first period 5 months b 4 my 13th b-day and im not sure on all the details of why we have periods but i would say go 2 beinggirl.com and they can answer all of ur Q about boys ur body and every thing a girl needs 2 know and there is NO BOYS allowed on that site

I started when i was 13 at school, end of day in music lesson lol. Periods are to clean out your system of the bad tissue basicly, and its best to not wait till you have your periods as you are at more risk to get pregnant, no period = no pregnancy lol.

B4 I started my period around teh age of 13 I took a pair of underwear and a pair of pants to shool with me. I it happens to you at school asked to be excused to the nurse then go to the nurse get a pad or a tampon and then change your clothes..

i had my first at 12, the day before having to testify against my father in a child abuse case... fun timing, huh? anyhoooo, the reason we menstruate is because our pituitary gland signals our body to produce different hormones when we reach puberty. a period is the lining of the uterus (endometrium) that is shed and expelled after we ovulate and the egg hasnt been fertilized.
