The US is not a welfare nation. Do you honestly believe that the country would expend so many resources (financial) if there was no greater gain in sight? The view that we're somehow willing to spend billions and get nothing in return is a bit naive.
The auto, plastics, health care, etc. industries depend on oil. It's not just gas or heating fuel, but oil is used in so many other products to the point that if they were no longer available, there'd be dire consequences for the US economy. The US made a deal with Saudi to provide military security and infrastructure (electricity plants, etc.) in exchange for oil. They were hoping to do the same in Iraq and when Hussein didn't go for the deal, guess what. In addition, there are other countries who compete for the same oil (China for ex.). If the US doesn't get it, someone else will.

Steve W is having wars for thousands of years unique to the middle east? Maybe you should dust off some history books. It's a lame argument - Europe had wars for all the time people have been there, same as North America, South America, Asia, and Africa.
The fact is, George Bush and those who put (financed) him in office want to control the entire world's oil supply, or as much of it as they can. The larger their monopoly on the most important fuel men need, the more they can charge for the fuel and the more they can exploit everyone on earth.

Oh yes, black gold and his family has been it a long time and are Friends with the bin Ladens.
They want control of it all.
Gas is going up again and someone is making a killing!! 1/3 of our oil comes from Canada and another 1/3 from Mexico! All the mid East combined we get 1/3, and most of those have no conflict going on!
How does gas go up so much when we get so little from the Middle East? Is it the market or what?

Everybody has "something to do" with the oil-producing countries because that area of the world has been messed up for thousands of years. Dust off a history book if they still use those in school.

Because he is doing what the people of America demand and that is to keep oil flowing.
Next time you sit at your computer perhaps you will appreciate that almost every product that goes into its production is a by product of oil, right down to the plastic.
I do not agree with what he has done but all Americans must start taking some responsibility for the actions he needed to take.

Yes....but so has every American President since oil became the most precious commodity to every advanced society's way of life. The mere reality is that the quality of your life, as well as the lives of the ones you love depends largely on the STABLE flow of natural resources into our country. So yes to answer your question...but the suggesting of your posting leads me to think that you feel this is a bad thing....and if that's true, I would be saddened, cause I sure as hell prefer American influence over radical Islamic extremists any day of the week..

Did you know that 92% of the Saudi workforce are non-Saudi immigrant workers?
Western companies drill the oil wells and run the refineries with cheap labor from East Asia.
The Saudis are too stupid and too lazy to run this operation by themselve's.
They sit on their butts and collect billions of dollars, while we drill it and produce it, and ofcourse use it.
How much money did the Saudi govt. give to the Tsunami rescue effort? 1/50 of what the Japanese gave!
How much money do they give the Palestinians? About the same. Notshit.

yeah this whole thing is because we want cheap oil. That is why as soon as Iraq's government failed, we took over the oil wells. Also that is why gasoline costs mere pennies on the gallon now. It also explains why the price of oil is a record low per barrel. Oh wait a minute.......
