James K. Polk.
He did everything he set out to do. Once he was done, he figured his job was finished and didn't seek re-election.

Not sure if this really counts, but Millard Fillmore
He succeeded from the Vice Presidency on the death of President Zachary Taylor, and then never got elected on his own.
The man did everything: brought about the opening of Japan, initiated the White House library, gave us the fugitive slave act, admitted California to the Union...THE MAN RAN AS A NO NOTHING!
Amazing...simply amazing!

Check out the song 'James K Polk' by 'They Might Be Giants' for all the reasons why 'Young Hickory' deserves a lot of kudos. That is if you accept the theory that it was America's Destiny to kick Mexico's *** and seize California while affirming Texas would be forever an American (or Confederate) asset, plus a whole lot of other things. Polk was an astute politician, true to his word, forthright & honest and his wife was truly a partner, consulted, cherished.

Jimmy Carter; he had the vision to understand the things we are going through now, and the desire to do somthing about it. Had he not been replaced by a sucsession of selfish idiots, who haven't a clue what the words "public interests" means, the world would be a very different place today.
