There are many alternatives to using crude oil. The type of alternative depends on what it will be used for.
Hydrogen seems like it will eventually be an extremely more abundant and cheap form of energy that can be used for anything. The only problem is better methods need to be developed to produce and distribute hydrogen that can be used as fuel.
Bio-ethanol is another alternative to crude oil which can be used to power many types of vehicles but is not feasible for powering cities and towns. Bio-ethanol is made can be made from corn, candy, and many other non-fossil fuels.
There are many more which are theorized and in use today. I think people need to get over their fear of nuclear energy. If nuclear plants today are much better designed and operated than ever before. Events such as those in Chernobyl and three mile island are almost impossible in the newly designed nuclear plants.

Get rid of combustion type engines. It's not hard to make a car go. Electricity can be generated from friction, or relative motion between a conductor and a magnetic field. Don't need crude oil for that either.

There is no alternative to crude oil...petroleum is petroleum. However, there are alternatives for many of the products made from petroleum...i.e., gasoline.
Many plastics are made from petroleum and there's few substitutes for that process. Most mass-prodcued candles are made from parafin, which is a by-product of refining petroleum. A vast array of lubricants, including vaseline, are made from petroleum.
Dad was a petroleum geologist...he always said there are so many excellent uses for the stuff that it was a shame we waste most of it on gasoline.

none really right now, even if there were there still exists no infrastructue for distribution
