Never use Internet Explorer whenever possible. Internet explorer is like a wide open door that allows spyware, adware, and viruses to waltz onto your system. Dump (stop using) internet explorer and install the Firefox web browser on your machine.

You can prevent, remove, and detect spyware by downloading, installing, and running a scan with Spybot Search and Destroy

Spyware is a site that logs your computer id and spy's on what sites you view. They use this information for marketing useless products and collecting information about you. A good free spyware program is ewido and you can also get a good free anti-virus program on the same page. www.avgfree.com

i downloaded the yahoo toolbar with an anti spy, and i also have ad-aware SE. some people like "spybot". i had it, every bit of af about 2 hours, it brought in more spyware than it got rid of.
