When I was in junior high school (a long time ago), we were reading a book and then a parent complained and the school caved, so we were not permitted to finish it. I was really enjoying it, and would like to read it now if only I knew the title.

Here's the basic plot: it's a take on the biblical Job story in which God and Satan are putting a man through some tests; however, as I remember it, it is told as if God and Satan are backstage in a theatre and Job is on stage responding to their directions. Again, this was a long time ago, so I may not have it exactly right. Any help will be appreciated--thanks!

Because it was a long time ago, I suppose it could have been a circus though I remember it as a theatre.

I don't know that story but Mark twain did the same thing in a story called letters from the earth with satan writting to gabreil about the people of earth so maybe check the author for other like stories. Also read letter to earth where an angel sends a report to a man wanting a favour from god.

Well it sounds a bit...like the introduction of Faust, and if you haven't got to finish it....but now so many writers wrote Faust, - Marlow,Goethe,Heine,Lenau,Thomas Mann,Puskin, Lermontov, Espronceda, Paul Valery ...etc, It's about the pact that Satan is making with Dr. Faust, he promises him everything he wants in life for his soul in eternity. And in the beginning God and Satan are preparing the set, and Satan asks permission to God if he could try to corrupt him, it's like a bet
