You can't fit a "bunch" of goldfish into a ten gallon... 2 goldfish would need at least 20-30 gallons. They do grow, and pretty quickly, and they produce a lot of waste and the ammonia output would be too much for a ten gallon tank. Ten gallons would be ok for one young goldfish, but it would have to be moved to a larger tank as it starts to grow. A few guppies or minnows would be ok in a ten gallon, but make sure to get a filter.
Goldfish do not stay small in a bowl... that is a myth. They may not grow as large as they should in a bowl, but it's because they're stunted and don't have the proper environment to grow as they should. A goldfish can't live a full life in a bowl, no matter what anyone tells you. Goldfish need strong filtration because they produce more waste, and they need more oxygen. Myths like that are one of the reasons that people think that goldfish only live a few years, which is not true at all.
A betta would be fine, but make sure to get a heater, because bettas do much better in warm water. They are tropical fish and they will be healthier in warm water. Keep it about 79 degrees F, and do 20 percent water changes every week.

first of all your fish might have been sick so clean your tank with bleach and hot water sure no more bleach is left in the tank that will kill any sickness that was left in the tank
bettas cant live together but a betta and goldfish actually get along also you can do different types of pretty goldfish like fantails just remember that it is only a 10 gallon tank so dont get to many they will need to have room to grow so only get about 5 or 6

NO!!!! NEVER put a male and female beta together!! They get super aggressive and want to attack one another. TRUST ME, lol. I've had at least 15 betas in my life... maybe 20 or 25. Whatever, I lost count.
I'm totally serious: 2 or more betas WILL fight with one another. The only other fish which get along with them are goldfish. You can buy 5 or 10. They won't grow too huge in that kind of environment.
Goldfish are absolutely fascinating. Did you know that if you keep a goldfish in a small 1 or 2 gallon goldfish bowl for it's whole life, it'll stay small? But as soon as you put it in a 1,000 gallon (or any other HUGE surrounding) aquarium, it'll start growing! If you put it in an absolutely gigantic environment, such as a pond, it'll grow to as long as a foot! It's incredible, lol.

For a ten gallon tank you can get about 3 or 4 gold fish. They have alot of different kinds to choose from. They don't need a heater. IF you get a Betta you can put a few other tropicals in with it but will need a heater.

sorry to hear about the beta. they're pretty. you could get another one or try your hand at some other colorful fish like mollies and/or neons. remember the cardinal rule of filling tanks with fish*- one gallon for every inch of fish. betas are 2-3 in. so they need 2-3 gallons. you could have a few others in there if you wanted with another beta. i had a beta in a big tank with other fish and it was totally fine.
in regard to getting goldfish, DON'T FREAKIN DO IT! goldfish are the dirtiest tank fish. if you feel you must have them (and they are pretty, i'll admit) don't get several. just get 2 and you'll see how fast your tank gets dirty, even if you have a filter.
i've had a 5,10, and now 30 gal. tank and i enjoyed having a bunch of neons in my 10 gal. with a little dwarf frog. neons are colorful, active, and live longest when in large numbers. plus they're cheap, so if they die, you can replace them easily.

Betta Fish are loner fish. They prefer small spaces. They are found in Vietnam and surrounding areas in small stale puddles. Gold fish are also not recommended for a 10 gal. They put off high levels of ammonia in their waste and are not good for small tanks. What I would recommend is a Tetra tank. You can put different types together and have color and little maintenance. PLZ DO NOT DO WHAT KAT RECOMMENDS! NEVER CLEAN WITH BLEACH, you will kill fish , it leaves a residue, use apple vinger and rinse well.

Gold fish tend to be a little bit on the dirty side (they poop alot), so you'll need to clean (10-20% water change using a gravel vacuum) it probably 2 times a week. You probably would only be able to get 2 TOPS using the guidline of 1 inch / gallon.

Bettas can be more colorful and you have to feed less often, goldfish are cheaper but they dirty the tank quicker.
You can get a betta and other tropical fish that are compatible.

I suggest U buy goldfish--if U want. "Coz they are more easy to breed rather than the bettas. They don't need much special equipments to treat. Just fresh water & sufficient food supply 'Coz they eat a lot. Besides they are so adorable when they shake their big tummy & that good looking tail. U can catch them by hand after washing Ur hands throughly. They don't die easily if U don't "overfeed" them.
