How come they pulled it off 40 years ago, but now they have a hard time keeping a space shuttle in low earth orbit without killing everybody on board?

No, the moon landing was not faked....it actually happened, don't be so easy to fall for all those conspiracy stories.

Going to the moon is expensive and there is no real purpose for us to do it on a regular basis at present. On the other hand, much can be done in Earth orbit in terms of scientific experiments as well as for commercial gain (satellites, ...), so that is why we have not gone back in about 30 or so years.

The space shuttle is an entirely different concept than going to the moon. The idea of the space shuttle was to design a reusable space craft which could take off like a rocket but land like an airplane (glider), by contrast to the disposable space capsules used during the space race.
The space program today does not have access to nearly as much funding as it did in the 60's when we were in a constant competition (a space race) with the USSR.

The space shuttle launched and landed over 100 times successfully with only two fatal accidents. No one remembers the 98+% of the time it worked perfectly, people focus on the two times it failed. The again, there is still room for improvement on NASA's part, especially when the astronauts' lives are at stake.

That is an urban legend that is almost believable as you watch the special effects created in media today, however if you take a look at some things from the 60's I think it should be obvious that it would be easier to put a man on the moon than to fake it. I was 13 when it happened, I watched Apollo 13 "Live". I also heard the news when 3 astronauts burned alive in seconds on the launch pad. The difference between the vietnam war and Iraq was the pictures were in black and white and more often than not if you lost a foot you lost your life. The sixties are a decade that it would benefit any young person to learn as much about as possible.

Peace out :)

Read, investigate, study that is how you can come to the conclusion those of us who were born then have.
It happened,it is a part of history but you must read it all not someones take on it. It is very recent history. The space shuttle has had considerably more flights then the "rockets" had. There were some serious and deadly accidents back in the 60's as well when they were just learning. I would love to see another moon mission to get the lunar rover and the tang. I wonder if it is still fresh (Tang) I would try it lol. Please don't look for the answer here go find it out, you will be more apt to believe it, take care ~A~

No, the moon landing was not faked. Who is "they"? How would "they" benefit from faking this?

Yes, flying the shuttle is hard, so were the Apollo missions. Consider the number of people who have gone into space and the number of people who have actually died because of malfunctioning equipment. Consider how difficult it is to do what NASA and other agencies have done. If NASA (or other space agencies) are so incompetent wouldn't more people be dead?

And just FYI in regards to a couple other posters: NASA stopped lunar missions because they figured they had learned all they needed to about the moon. It's a chunk of rock and dust, it's not that complex. Additionally, we are still analyzing data brought back from those missions. Yes, missions. There was more than one mission to the moon, both manned and unmanned. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_program

no actually statisically the shuttles are pretty safe
not enough money to nasa for manned moon landings us needs the money to support military and weapons reasearch need to work on earth problems b4 spending more cash on space exploration such as moon landings

NO!!! That would be too hard of a "fake" to pull off!!

******LOL!! But you do have a good point about their track record of killing everyone they send into outer space. I wondered that myself!!! It's like being able to cook a gourmet meal but having a hard time warming up a TV dinner.

It's not fake. Reflectors left on the moon's surface are used on a daily basis to measure the moon's distance. With the proper gadgetry, you could get a reflection from one.
