We were driving back to Arizona from San Diego on Interstate 8 and saw a dead animal on the side of the road that looked exactly like a small (about 15 lbs) kangaroo. What could it have been???

I would think it's a Jack rabbit. Their hind legs are much longer than their forelegs and they could look like small kangaroos when they are dead. The key is that all kangroos have very large tails. So, as long as you did not notice a long tail, it should be a jack rabbit. If you did see a tail, then it could be an unfortunate runaway pet.

I would agree with Laser (above). It might have also been a kangaroo rat. Or it could have been a kangaroo! People do import animals into the country illegally. Most likely a Jack Rabbit though.
