I can think of many reasons, foremost, I believe, is that video games are very fast-paced, and require memory, coordination, logical thinking, and have sense-oriented triggers. If you or someone you know is ADD or ADH, these are the pacifer for that active thought pattern. The desire to beat the game is insatiable until it is conquered.

I'll go along with answer #1 along with the fact that "like gambling" it becomes an addiction. The adrenaline rush and the vacation from reality!
