Well, that depends on a lot of things, but the first thing I would want to know before I even attempted to answer your question is "What is your e-mail Program" and who is your ISP, that is Internet Service Provider. Common ISP's are Earthlink, Time Warner Roadrunner, Att.net; Datanet, Netzero, Aol. Most of these have their own web based e-mail programs and by default, in order to protect you from getting a virus through an e-mail attachment, they do not allow you to open that attachment. However, depending upon the e-mail program you have, you can go and change this setting, thereby allowing you to open up an attachment.

You have not mentioned whether you are using outlook express or yahoo or something else.if you are using outlok express go to menu bar-tools- option-security-virus protection and then check that the check box-dont allow attachment to saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.Change your security setting and uncheck this warning.Apply it-ok. Again opened it .Your problem may be solved. For some other application you have to check your security settings.

You need to have the program that made the attachment. For example if it was made with Microsoft Word you need to have Microsoft Word.
