Let's see the candidates:
Cro Magnon vs. Neanderthal:affected us for alleternity
Yorktown
Stalingrad
The Spanish Armada
battle of Marathon
Battle of Midway
battle of Thermopylae: 250,000 to 7000
Battle for Hue in 1968 during the Tet Offensive.
Leipzeg, Napolianic wars
Battle of Chalons (451 AD): stopped Atilla
Moscow 1941
Antietam (as opposed to Gettysburg)
Chosin Campaign 1950
Bttle of Britain:Never was so much owed by so many to so few
Battle of la Marne: stopped the German invasion
Cajamarca,Spanish Conquest of Peru, 1532
Waterloo,Napoleonic Wars, 1815
Cannae 216 BC
Vienna, Austria-Ottoman Wars, 1529
Hastings, Norman Conquest of England, 1066
kursk....the largest tank battle ever.
Battle of Tours:Had Europe lost, most the world would be muslim and vastly different than it would be today.
The one i almost picked best was:
Kharkov. I liked Manstein's skillful counter offensive and Paul Hausser's master work on the tactical level. The II. SS Panzer Korps along with supporting elements beat off a Soviet force that out numbered them 7 to 1 and retook the city.
and then there's:
Atomic Bombing of Japan
My pick is:
The United States dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 to hasten the end of World War II in the Pacific. Although it would be the first, and to date the only, actual use of such weapons of "mass destruction," the mushroom clouds have hung over every military and political policy since then.
And the human population has stared into the dark abyss of global suicide since those dreadful days in August '45..
Greatest military victory....hmmmm, i don't like the term 'great' for nuclear war, and aerial bombardment of citizens was pretty barbaric, but the consequences were pretty monumental...i guess war IS hell.

Imagine the following:
Iran with their allies with 3 million soldiers and the most armed forces, equipped with the most modern technology invade Europe! Everyone has been seized and only a small in number state is free. The Iranians have destroyed everything, including every city of this small state.
Then, the army of the Iranians and their allies are having a battle against the small state. When the Iranians win, the whole west will collapse and the Iranians will rule the whole world! During this sea battle, either the West will remain free or the Iranian will concord the whole world and the Iranian dictator king will rule for ever!
At this sea battle, which is a real historical event, the Athenian and Spartan fleet and people faced the multiple navy and army of the Persians, in 2476 years ago, in the most important, greatest with most boats with the largest total ship weight of any other sea battle, the Greeks wan and the threat of Iranians was stopped for ever for the West and thus the Western civilization was protected and proceeded!
Sea Battle of Salamis, 2476 years ago!

So many battles could have changed the course of human history had they gone the other way...Which is the most important?
I'm going to go with Stalingrad during WW2. The Nazi's were on the brink of success. For all annimosity we had towards th Soviets during the Cold War, they put up one hell of a fight. Of all the turning points in history, how would the world be different if the Nazi's had prevailed (especially before the onset of winter).

If I had to choose 1 battle overall, it would be the Battle of Hastings in England in 1066. Duke William of Normandy's victory set the eventual stage for Britain to become a world power and give rise to many of the world's democracies.

The battle of Antietam in the American civil war, If Lee routes McClellan and the union is forced to let the confederacy go on their own. A divided America never becomes a super power and is unable to intervene in the world wars and fascism takes over the world.

Battle of Tours in 732.
Charles Martel led the French armies to victory over an invading Muslim army after that army had succeeded in conquering most of the rest of the former Roman empire.
Without this victory, Europe likely would have fallen to the Muslims and Islam would have established its complete dominance over the globe, gradually suffocating Christianity in the lands under its rule.

The Battle of Gaugamela would be my top choice. It decidedly changed the course of civilization. The resulting spread of Hellenism impacted religion, art, government, economics, etc

it might not be the most important but it is certainly the longest. The war between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It dates back to the bible to the war between the Israelites and the Philistines.
