I wanna give up this modern lifestyle, the money, cars, fast food, computers, telephones, running water, shopping, working, etc.

Are there any groups that have turned their backs on this world order and started their own. Not looking for religious groups or hippies, just people who have decided to live outside soceities boundries.

Why... I think it is a stupid way to live. I am sick of , money, clock watching, stress, etc. We are not made for this.

I would like to get back to basics. Stuff the rest.

Dont know if you remeber this programme called 'the good life' it was about a couple that gave up the capitalist way of life and decided to become totally self sufficient, dream or what?? growing own food, and just living within your means on your own labour, fantastic. but you would have to buy your land or find the rent money and the thing is, you stil have to pay taxes for your land, nhs, education if you have children etc even the religious groups and hippies need money to pay for these things. its a shame, but i dont think you can live outside society unless you can pay for it. travellers are probably as close as you can get, and they have a really hard time of it beecause of the attitude they recieve from people within the community. its sad that you cant just opt out of society but the powers that be dont allow it. i would opt out of society if i could. maybe a bohemia lifestyle would be worth thinking about, instead of buying into capitalism get a job you enjoy (less restrictive and time dependent) rather than one for money and live within your means, it may be tight financially but what you lose in material goods you will gain in freedom, instead of spending money on cars and stuff, start growing your own little vegetable patch and slowly become self sufficient: a future goal, something to aim for.

The amish do that. They're religious fanatics, though.

There are still somewhat primitive peoples in some places in africa, and simple societies in some places in south america. They all speak languages other than english, though, so you'd have to learn those.

There are small groups of people in america who just live outside of society and have little farms and stuff. You'd probably think of many of them as "hippies", though, even though that's not quite the word i'd use for it.

There are lots of survivalist types in middle america, who don't exactly live without technology, but they do enjoy living away from society at large.

Keep in mind, though, that no technology means no medical technology too. Life can get very unpleasent very quickly if you're normally used to fancy things like "antibiotics" and "defibrilators" and "life saving surgery".

You might want to try reading B.F. Watson's Walden II and it will give you a fictional idea of a commune where the belief in free will is totally rejected and determinism is accepted and people are accepted for who and what they are and given positions relative to their skills and abilities. But no, I know no commune that you speak of but if you find one I would like to know as well. I abhored what the Uni-bomber's actions led to but Ted Kosenzki's manifesto is still available on the internet (do a google search).....He was a mathmatics professor who totally rejected where technology was leading us to and ended up living in the woods with nothing and was most likely driven mentally ill either before or after and arrested. His manifesto is brilliant though about the possible horrors that technology is leading us into and how we need to start making drastic changes to prevent this nightmare (of course many other authors in the 60's up to today have written extensively about this topic: try Alan Watts also.

I do not know, really. I know the Amish people in Pennsylvania. I just can't imagine life without running water, telephone and money? Those are the basic necessities, and life without them are just very hard. Another thing to consider is that almost every corner in the country has been touched with the convenient of modern world.

believe it or not you are not alone in this thinking. there are many people throughout california who have said screw this rat race....why should i keep chasing rainbows looking for gold that you cant find outside you, but inside you. so they dumped their jobs and superficial friends and joined these communities that groww their own food and always hug each other seem to love each other...thats right they love each other. im still in limbo, because i still cant relate to their lifestyle yet.
