The only way to know when you are about to ovulate if you are irregular, is to chart signs of fertility. Please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler for details, but here's a short summary...
You need to chart your basal body temperature (BBT) to know when you have already ovulated. Take your temperature when you wake up in the morning before you get out of bed or do *anything* (even talk on the phone). Chart the numbers on a piece of graph paper. When the temperature is several tenths of a degree higher than the last few temperatures, you have ovulated, and it is *too late* to get pregnant. Your period should start in 12-16 days.
In order to know when you should have sex in order to get pregnant, you need to chart cervical fluid. You can see the fluid by wiping at the vaginal opening when you use the toilet. Right after your period, there will probably be no fluid. After some time, it will be kind of sticky. It will get gradually wetter during the cycle. When it is wet, it means potentially fertile. When it is very wet, clear, and stretchy (it looks like egg white), you are very fertile. This is the time you want to have sex. If you know your husband is very fertile, have sex every day. If you know he has marginal to low-average fertility, have sex every other day. (If you're not sure, you have to pick one and try it...) The egg-white fluid may last for 1-4 days. The last day is the day you are most fertile; the day after is when you will probably see the rise in your BBT.
Personally, I wouldn't suggest using hormonal birth control to regulate your period. First of all, it may not work. Second, it will delay when you can start trying. And third, it *may* make your periods more regular for a few months, but it can cause infertility for a full year (and occasionally permanently). Not very good odds!!
Again, the above is just a *short* summary; read the book for the full description!!

Read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler(sp?). You'll learn all kinds of things you didn't know about your fertility, including exactly how to tell when you ovulate by keeping a chart of your basal body temperature. The book explains it all.
Your irregular periods could mean many things. You should see your doctor about that. If you are pretty young, like early teens, then it could just be a matter of time to let your periods regulate.
The ovulation predictor kits you can buy at the drugstore (they're next to the pregnancy tests) are good if you already know the range of days when you could be ovulating. For instance, if your cycles were 28 days long, then you would probably ovulate around day 14. But if you have really long cycles, then it's hard to tell, and it would be a waste of money to buy the kit and use up all the test sticks with negative results each time. Read the book, keep a basal body temperature chart, and after one cycle, you'll know if you ovulated or not and when. Then the following cycle, you can use the ovulation predictor tests to predict your ovulation before it happens.

Losing some weight was necessary for me. I also used the saliva kit. Affordable and easy to use and reusable. Ferns in the dried saliva tell you when you begin to ovulate and last throughout your most fertile 7 days becoming clearer as you get closer to ovulation. For irregular periods you just have to use it everyday. Don't eat or drink anything before, it works best when you first wake up. I was surprised the first time I saw ferns, I had been trying for 7 years and was at the point I didn't think I would ever ovulate. My son is 9 months old now. Good luck, don't give up hope.

irregular periods can mean alot of things, it can happen normally if you are under strees , physical or mental , can happen in virgins, or it might mean some organic problem for which you should check with your doc
do you get a lot of pain before or during your periods , do you have white ,pale ,yellowish ,brown , or greenish colour discharge on the normal days ,
do you have burning sensation while passing urine ,any fever etc
these are a few things your doc might ask before she tells you for sure whats the problem
as for calculating your ovulation time , here we go
there is no sure way to know your ovulation time , though you can try 3 ways to know your unsafe period
ONE, next time you start mentruating ,starting from that day onwards record your body temp early morning , the moment you wake up lying in bed . make sure sure you dont eat or drink anything as it will give false recording. the day you ovulate your basal body temp would have risen by 0.5 degree
TWO, if your periods are regular say if its 28or 30 days then starting from your last period , count 28 or 30days , that will give you next period , go back 14 days from that day this 14 day period is a constant whatever be your period length , that will give you the day of ovulation , but that is not enough as your unsafe period is 4 days before and four days after the ovulation , that gives 9 days of unsafe period. for practical purposes , 8 days after and before periods are considered safest
THREE, before ovulation the cervical mucus in thin and sticky, after ovulation it becomes thick , this shows that the ovulation has already occured

you need to talk to your gynocologist at this point. he will put you on birth control pills to regulate your cycle... i was only on it for 2 months and the doctor said that i should ovulate normally for a couple of months once i stop taking the RX. so far he is completely correct! if you are trying to conceive i would recommend temperature charting: http://www.drkaslow.com/html/basal_body_temp.html
here is a free sight that i use to log my temps at:
http://www.fertilityfriend.com/
to increase your chances of getting pregnant you need to regulate the cycle and do the temperature charting. the doctor will be able to tell from your chart if your cycle appears to be on track OR if there are further tests that are needed.
here's a sight for charting your pregnancy :)

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!
