From an evolutionary biology standpoint it is because the female of the species contributes a greater amount of biological cost (ova development, gestation, care of the offspring) than the male. Therefore the female of the species wants to find a male that will be able to provide enough resources for her and any resultant offspring so the survival of the offspring is ensured.
The courtship behavior is when the male displays his available resources in an attempt to entice the female into allowing him coital access.
This still exists with modern humans but with the additional twist of societal development. In developed nations women are more than capable of taking care of themselves and any of their offspring but it is instinct to find a partner who will help provide for the potential offspring.
So even in casual circumstances, when long-term relationships and children are not even in consideration, the instinct remains.

That my friend is an interesting question. Courtships were first found in 17th century societies. Becasue there were too many laws in many countrys, people ould lay down thier own law. The only way for this law to be effective was to take it outside of national borders (e.g. international waters). Thus these "court ships" were a way for people to try other people in thier own court of law. A modern day judge dredd if you will. Women love these courtships so much due to thier irrational thought processes. These courtships allow them to do whatever they feel like doing to men. Of course you can't find them as often today becasue women have found another way to control men on thier own terms. Thats marriage. Now women will often be found skipping courtship all together and rushing to the altar. That way they can take all my money and leave me.

Well, it is a natural part of life. You court someone with the intention of finding a possible husband. I hope you just don't think girls should hop in bed with someone right off the bat. I don't care what you see on TV, in real life even with today's low moral standards, men/boys do NOT want a girl/woman for a commitment, who hops in bed with everyone she meets.
