I can play puzzles out this way, but I feel like I'm missing some logical step. Does anyone else have this experience.

I've thought about this a lot, and come to the conclusion that no, there is never a time when one must consider what my mom calls a "hypothetical" scenario to beat it. Once I tried, and the ploy succeeded, and I was so annoyed by this that I backtracked the clue that allowed me to eliminate the hypothetical scenario. Once I isolated that clue, it allowed me to defeat the puzzle in the normal manner.

It's sort of hard to explain like this, but I hope my point got across. Just keep an open mind and think around the corners, and all sudoku puzzles will readily yield to logic.

You never need to guess in Sudoku. Ever. You can solve it with logic only.

No, there should be no guessing involved...Logic will carry you through, although I have run into some very tough ones.
