I think that we have high expectations for our children's education, but in this world of instant gratification, I don't think that most people are capable of understanding what it takes to educate a child. When little Trent or Zoe spend most of their time in front of the electronic babysitter (tv) or playing video games or being shuttled from one lesson to another, they don't usually have much energy left for learning. I blame society. Kids get everything handed to them nowadays and they don't know how to earn anything, least of all good grades. They're overstimulated and don't know how to just sit still and read or to go to a library "just because". We're not motivating them enough. We also expect that our children are getting the "best" teachers b/c we pay taxes, but when teachers make a starting salary around $25,000 a year and are expected to pay for their own supplies and classroom decorations, you're not giving any incentive to the really intelligent students to go into teaching. I went to graduate school for elementary education and was shocked by how many people in my classes who couldn't spell basic words or do basic multiplication and division (3rd grade level) and were all in the field b/c it was "easy". Worried yet? To answer your question, the problem is ALL of the above.

The easiest thing to do is to blame the parents. One of the most frustrating things for parents is how little the schools (teachers, staff, principals, etc.) really want their children to succeed. The people in America are so diverse in culture and incomes that to expect all children to learn in the same speed and style is not only unrealistic, but outright stupid. The one way to improve all American schools is to turn them back over to the parents. Put parents in charge of firing bad teachers and rewarding good ones. That would be a start on the right track.

She helped me with my homework, defined uncertain recommendations, and uncovered me to concepts and proposals that I likely might want to were gaining expertise of in college.
