It's nice. The people are nice. Weather is harsh in winter, but nice the rest of the year. It's a good place to raise a family.

You've picked a good city. Here's the pluses and minuses:

Business climate: Pretty average. It's a decent sized city but job growth has been pretty flat for about 5 years. There isn't much big industry. Lots of real estate and technology companies. I wouldn't call it an "attractive" market for HR professionals but it isn't unattractive.

Snow: I moved to Denver from Virginia. We had worse winters in Virginia, if you can believe that! The front range tends to catch the snow storms and keep them west of the Continental Divide. Result? Awesome skiing an hour away but sunny and moderate in Denver. But shhhhhh, don't tell anyone. We want them to think we get slammed with snow so they don't move here.

Housing: Depends what you are used to. If you are coming from an east coast or west coast city, this is a very affordable market. If you are from a small midwestern town, not so much. Luckily housing has been relatively flat for the past few years. No irrational exuberance that is likely to cause a crash. You can buy a nice starter house in a nice neighborhood without much risk of a price decline. Check out the Washington Park and Park Hill neighborhoods.

People: Very nice and friendly. Not snotty (like NY) or self-absorbed (like LA). Basically just normal people -- some nice, some not. The folks up in Boulder can be a tad judgemental and arrogant, but its a cool town so we'll forgive them.

Fun things to do: It's an outdoor paradise. Skiing, hiking, biking, golfing... Basically, anything with an "ing" at the end of it. :-) There is also a great music and art scene. Good restaurants. Beautiful national parks within a short drive. Etc...

Good luck with your decision!

No, the snow is not really bad at all. In fact, we don't get that much. The mountains get hammered, but in the plains, where Denver is, not so much. If we're lucky, we'll get one, MAYBE two storms a week that will drop a couple inches or so. The snow's usually melted off by that afternoon though. It rarely sticks around for weeks, even days on end.

The average winter temperatures are usually in the 30 to 40°'s. We'll have a couple solid weeks of below 0 temperatures. (And not 20 below. It does not get THAT cold.) Usually around 5 to 10 below at the most.

Most people are pretty nice, as far as big cities go.

There are a million fun things to do. Denver is a very artsy, cultural town. There's galleries, museums, amusement parks, sports, concerts, clubs.....if you can't find something fun, then you're not looking very hard!

Good luck, and if you have any more questions, feel free to email me!

I was just in Denver last week visiting on vacation. I cannot tell you about the housing or the jobs, but the people are very nice and friendly. The weather there in the summer time can get very warm, but it is not a humid heat - I am from the Midwest where the humidity is very high. The heat in Denver is more bearable. Denver has a lot of parks where you can jog, walk, people watch, walk your dog. There is a bus line and what they call a 'light rail' which is a train that goes down town. The view is very pretty with all of the mountains. A website that you can check out is www.denvergov.org it has all kinds of information on it about Denver. Fun things to do would depend on what you think is fun. You can go to the ski resorts in the summer and mountain bike, or hike. In the winter of course you would ski :) I know they get lots of snow, but I think they are pretty good about taking care of the roads. There are all kinds of museums. Check out the website it will be a lot of help. Newspapers are the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post. Good Luck

I'm about to move there. It's a big city, Boulder only 30 miles away and that is a hip place. Fort Collins is an hour away and is also a great city. Estes park is hour and half away and it houses some of the best treasures in the front range. I worked for a few summers in college at YMCA of Estes Park maintaining the grounds and hiking Rocky Mountain National Park. If you go to Denver from sea level, drink alot of water when you get there. The reason that Denver has been voted the most athletic city in the nation is because when you do exercise there, at that altitude it's all gravy. Cannot wait to get there because Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and BC are God's Country. Plus, live in Denver long enough and you will understand about "the fourteeners". Once you climb one, literally, you want the next 53.
Oh yeah, it gets cold there, I'm from Texas and will need to take driving lessons for the ice they get in the mountains. Skiing in Colorado, well just look up the season pass price vs. the 3 day price for your typical vacation and you will see what I'm talking about.

We just moved to Denver last year and the snow wasn't even close to as much as we thought it was going to be. It was in the high 60s around Christmas. I think we only got at most 20 inches of snow all winter, maybe 6 storms, and I wouldn't even call them storms. Denver doesn't get that much snow, it mostly stays in the mountains. I only remember one storm last year in Novemeber where it dropped below zero, but it only dropped below zero at night and it was only for a few days. The job market is pretty good in most areas but you will probably want to look into your industry because there are a few industry were the job market isn't great. People here are very friendly but it can take awhile to make friends. If you like outdoorsy stuff, you will love Denver. There are a lot of parks, places to hike, etc. There are some fun places to shop and good restaurants. There are a couple of museums and theaters and Boulder isn't too far.

Winters are a mixed bag. In 2003 our christmas high was 70. A few weeks later, we had 5 feet of snow on our driveway. The city is fun. Many nice people, great places to go skiing. We have a train system that covers most of the city. A new train system will open in november covering the tech center. Lots of hiking biking etc.

It is completely the opposite of what I thought it would be, there were alot more Spanish people there than I expected. I mean I am not prejudice I just didn't really expect it. However, Boulder is really nice though. I was only there between Feb-April but during that time it did snow alot and was very cold. And I had missed the worsed of it as I was told. Gets like 20 below Zero from what Denver people told me. Hope this helps.
