Here are some suggestions that have worked for me. You can skip reading these and just tranquilize your children...just kidding.

1. Go to the dollar store and buy some fun coloring books, story books, dolls, toy cars, etc. that you know your children will like. Wrap them in paper. Whenever you feel the tension rising, break out a surprise.

2. Purchase snack size ziploc baggies. Load the baggies with your kids' favorite snacks...goldfish crackers, Cheerios, little oreos, raisins, etc. The small portion size is just right for little ones to have their own treat without totally messing up the car.

3. We love frozen grapes. Before we travel, I wash and remove seedless grapes from the stem. I divide them into ziploc bags and freeze them. I keep an ice chest in the car and load it with the frozen grapes. They help keep the bottled water cool and make a great snack.

4. Take lots of bottled water. Koolaid makes individual packets of flavoring for a standard bottle of water, if you want to change the taste.

5. Movies, kids' sing along tapes, story books work great to entertain the troops.

6. On long trips, I line the seats with a fitted bed sheet. This makes clean up so easy once you make your destination. With the sheet in place, I can let my kids play with play dough and even watercolor paints.

I suggest making bologna or peanut butter & jelly sandwiches to keep them full. Combos are a good snack for the road as well as fruit roll=ups. Kids like the liscense plate game which is where you can find all the states. That game can be entertaining the whole way b/c you never know what you will see.

Here's some pointers to take for the young children:
For drinks--buy juice pouches
food--club crackers, fruit by the foot, gummi snacks, suckers, tootsie rolls, fruit (take in a cooler)
entertainment--bring a portable dvd player (if you have one) and some dvds, at target, you can buy portable car games like guess who, connect four, and battleship for about 2 or 3 dollars. Bring some cards, childrens books, small stuffed animals, and toys that the children can interact with.

pop and water are good for drinks. small snacks for the kids like goldfishes or licorice or pre cut fruit or grapes cheese and crackers sandwiches fruit juices etc, for the adults was the pop and water the kids snacks are good for you too but you could add hot rods cookies popcorn what ever you want. to keep the kids busy for that long at that age is going to be tough. you can sing tell stories look at farm animals listen to kid music or bring a dvd if you have one of those players in your vehicle but i suggest that about every 2 hours get out and stretch as necessary just as much as for you as the kids.

For snacks, I would do, chex mix, dry cereals, chips, and for drinks, I would choose something like capri sun juices, and others like that which have a straw. We just took a road trip to Ma. from Fl. with our 5 kids...ages 8 to 18 years old. Good luck!!! It was a long trip. little ones brought coloring books and crayons, books for reading, and music c.d.'s. Good Luck!!!
