You are supposed to only give newborns sponge baths until their umbilical cord falls off. You can lay a towel on your bed, and have a tub of warm water with soap and wash cloth. Just uncover the part of your baby you will be washing, part by part, and dry that part off once you are finished washing that part. Sorry if it doesnt make sense, I swear I know how to do it, cuz I have a 6 month old so I was just doing that a few months ago! Good luck! and congrats!

Sponge baths only until the cord falls off. Get everything you need before you start. You don't leave your baby for even a second. And I just laid my son on a towel in the floor or on the bed for this.Just dampen a washcloth with warm water and baby soap. Rub that over them gently, stay away from the umbilical cord(also circumcision site if a boy) and the face. After you've gotten everywhere with the soapy cloth, get a damp cloth(warm). Start with the face, wipe gently over. Then, wipe all of the soap off. Wrap baby in a warm towel. Make sure your house is warm before starting, babies get cold really quickly.
And when you go to give them a REAL bath get EVERYTHING you need. Diaper, clothes, lotion, towels, anything you think you may need. The best baby bathtub I have found, you can find at wal-mart. I think it's by safety first. But it has a sling across it, looks like a duck. And then you can take the sling thing off, so the tub will last longer. Best thing ever for a newborn. Yes, you still have to hold onto them, but it makes things so much easier. And wash their hair last, it makes them really cold, so the less time they have to sit there with a wet head the better. You'll be fine, just remember, NEVER, for any reason, leave your baby alone in the tub, even if it is only a baby bathtub. They can easily drown, and it doesn't take much time. If you're a person who absolutely cannot even miss a phone call, take the phone with you when you bathe them. If you don't have a cordless phone, whoever it is will call back. Congrats on the baby, best wishes!

You can give them a sponge bath the day after you get home. The sponge baths should continue every 3-4 days for the next 2 weeks... and then you can give them a real bath.
Don't be scared. For the sponge bath, if you don't want to use the infant tub with the liner, place the baby on nice thick towels on the floor or bed (just make sure you have your hand on him/her at all times), and use a soft washcloth with warm water and very mild soap (if you wish). Just wipe gently and you're done in a couple of minutes.
Trust me, babies won't break. Just be careful with their neck at this stage. Pretty soon, you'll be holding with one arm, washing with the other... Good luck!

You can give your baby a bath as soon as YOU think she needs it. Personally, I did it within a couple of days. All you have to do is put her in the baby tub with like an inch of warm water, and then gently wipe her down with a damp washcloth. Be careful not to get any water on her umbilical cord. You don't have to use soap or anything. I suppose you could wash her hair, but wait until you're comfortable enough to do it. Later on, after the umbilical cord has fallen off, you can give her a bath with more water.
Please note that the asshole LOTHARIO who answered below my answer, has been harrassing me. I asked a simple question of whether it's okay to have a small crush while married. I would never do anything to hurt my family. Don't listen to anything this asshole says - if you don't believe me, look at the answers he has posted to other people's questions.

A couple of days after you bring him home. Just be careful with the belly button and make sure you put alcohol all over it with a q-tip or it won't come off right. and don't worry about it burning him. I was so scared to do that to my daughter i couldn't do it the first time, i made my mother-in-law do it. You can get a bath rest thing from walmart that fits in a sink to lay them on which comes in very handy or someone can just hold him. Don't buy a baby bath tub they aren't worth it b/c by the time your baby outgrows the bath rest he will be able to sit up. Don't submerse his ears in the water either. Put the lotion in the bath water to get it warm or set it in a bowl of really hot water for a better effect. Your baby will scream too so you might want some ear plugs. Make sure you get pictures. Hope this helps.

You can bathe a newborn immediately. They usually show you in the hospital how to, but all you have to do is but about an inch of warm water in a baby tub and rub them down a little at a time with a wash cloth and rinse with warm water. Try not to get the belly button wet if possible, but make sure you clean it when your done with the bath. Good luck.

Whoa...don't listen to these answers. YOU DO NOT BATHE A NEWBORN UNTIL THE UMBILICAL CORD STUMP FALLS OFF!!!! I can't believe any mother that has had a newborn would tell you that. You are supposed to sponge bathe them. And what you do is get a couple of bowls of warm water. Not hot, not cold, WARM. Put just a drop of baby soap in one and clean in the other. A baby wash clothe and clean. Towel dry and your done. I just can't believe that some people truely don't know what they are talking about. Congrats on your baby.

they taught us new mommies in the hospital how to bathe a newborn. you can do it right away, just make sure the water is a good warmth-test it with your elbow-its more sensitive then your hand. Make sure you get all your bath supplies and clothing ready before you put him in the bath.
You can get one of those baby bathtubs cheap at a walmart or something, and carefully put your baby in it, holding his head at the neck so his ears dont get wet.
With your free hand first wash his eyes from the inside out, very gently, then gently wash the rest of his face (no soap is put on the babies face). Then gently wash the body(first) and then his hair. Once your finished the general bath, take a q-tip and clean the bellybutton cord area and if it is a circumsized boy, gently clean the area with a clean q-tip. All of this should really take a minute or 2. Take him out, wrap him in a soft clean towel and cuddle!!

Use only plain water on a washcloth for baby's face and wash that first. You can use baby wash on the rest of him/her. Most of the other answers here are good. I would just add that you should make sure there are no fans on and that the room is comfortably warm for the baby before the bath starts. Gather all the things you might need before you bathe them. Towel, washcloth, diaper, clothing, brush, vaseline or alcohol pads, etc. Take your time but for the first couple baths, wash the hair last so their head isn't wet through all of the bath. Congratulations.

When baby first comes home you should sponge bath. Continue this until the cord stump falls off. Make sure to check that there is not in open skin after it falls off. If there is then you should not put baby in water, but if the skin is closed than you can now enjoy bath time (putting the baby in water) with your new baby.
