The premise -
The show basically was the foundation for all the animated comedies that are popular today. It was the first show designed to be an animated sitcom set in the present rather than the past (Flintstones) or the future (Jetsons). I mentioned the hanna barbara shows because in the history of comedic sitcoms, those two were one of if not the first animated sitcoms ever. Simpsons became so popular because it took the situational and comedic elements of those shows and incorporated that into a present day sitcom about a lower middle class family struggling to survive in society. This premise allowed audience members to connect more with the show and, inadvertantly, added to it's popularity.

The Humor -
I'm sorry that I don't have a source to prove this information (It was told to me by a professor of a TV Film and Comedy college class) but individuals who watch the Simpsons regularly are found to be more intelligent than individuals that don't. That is because the comedy of the Simpsons is very well balanced. The humor is not solely satire (unlike South Park) and actually features almost all aspects of comedy i.e. slapstick. This well-balanced type of comedy makes it well-received by audiences everywhere.

We have enjoyed the show for many years for various reasons;
1. the dialogue is funny
2. the writers use current event subjects in their story lines and frequently make fun of politicians and entertainers
3. the Simpson cartoon characters are for the most part a funny group of characters with personalities that match actual people that we know or have run into
4. we are able to laugh at a family that is almost the complete opposite of who we are
5. it's a time when we gather and are able to watch the same tv show together
6. we like Barney

It was the first of its type.

"The sitcom is a satirical parody of the "Middle American" lifestyle epitomized by its title family. It lampoons many aspects of the human condition, as well as American culture, society as a whole and even television itself. The Simpsons has also had a significant influence on post-Cold War popular culture.[1] The show has also been cited as an influence on many adult-oriented animated series in the late 1990s, such as South Park and Family Guy.[2][3]

The Simpsons is currently the longest-running American sitcom and longest-running American animated program of all time."

Family values...no matter how sick or demented the jokes...the Simpsons are basically a symbol of the good old fashioned American family. How so?

1) Homer and Marge never got divorced (I think).
2) Marge is a loving and dutiful wife.
3) Bart, Lisa and Maggie are just typical kids.

Because it mocked popular culture at a time where this was still new. Then, along came Southpark. Ahhhh... how refreshing. How good it is to be American... if you had the Simpsons in the middle east, the "government" would come steal your daughter and sell her to the sex trade, kill your sons, and rape your wife. Then they'd torture you for ages and kill you so you die a slow death... all because you mocked your fellow citizens.

Honestly, I have no idea why it is so popular. Personally, I don't like it or find it amusing but to each their own, I rather watch Hey Arnold lol.

It is a parody, it pokes fun at human idiosyncrasies and portrays them in an excessive manner. In other words, it is so funny because it is so true, most people just don't realize its the truth.
