There were 3 travelers, who checked into a hotel for the night. One of them asked the clerk how much the stay would be, and the clerk replied: "$10 each, or $30 for the three of you."
So, each traveler gave the clerk a ten-dollar bill to total $30 for their stay.
The clerk thought a moment and said, "So sorry. I told you wrong. There is a $4 discount for three guests. The cost of the room will only come to $26 dollars, so he gave each of them $1 back, and they agreed to let him keep a dollar for himself, since he could not divide the dollar evenly among the three guests.
All were glad to get the discount, but one of them said: "We gave you a total of $30 to begin with, but since you gave each of us a dollar back, that means that we each paid you a total of $9 each, for a sum of $27. We let you keep $1.00 for yourself, so that is a total of $28.00. My question to you is: where are the other $2.00?"
