You are stranded on a deserted island. It's unclear if and when you will ever rejoin society. Assume others are with you. . .young and old. And food, shelter, etc., to live out the rest of your lives safely and comfortably.

So, if you could only take 10 BOOKS with you on the island, which titles/authors would you pick and why?

Be careful:

1. You may need some practical advice on how to survive on an island, deal with medical emergencies, etc.
2. You can select titles that are deeply personal to self indulgent but. . .
3. Wouldn't you want to share with others the best that your slice (and sense) of society and culture have to offer. . .
4. As well as have some books that would continue to stretch and challenge the mind, body, and spirit?

Think about it carefully and then reply back. . .the best answer will be selected on the basis of rationale and thoroughness!

Ten books to a desert Island? Lets be realistic instead of books that will rot away without protection. If you have others with you, there is no need to return to society, its present. lets search for knowledge of what is vital for life. I would want a raft full of mosquito netting, a half mile of rope, a shovel and axe, a fishingpole with three spools of hightest line and all sizes of hooks, and a shotgun with plenty of ammo. A honey who had no mental baggage and full use of all my God given parts. A GPS and laptop to inventory all plants on the island and a generator with fifty gallons of Gas to use at specific times to access the plants of the world data base, since there will be no idiots around to hire as taste testers. Pots, plates and silverware because there will be no way to make such items. A pallet full of waterproof matches, lime to cover our excretement and tools to pull teeth since plant sugars are the cause of tooth decay. Ten bolts of cloth and fifty vials of penecillian per person for unexpected illness. Books, your not gonna need but if I could take just one, it would be how to teach english as a reading skill, since there may be children who would need critical thinking skills and english is the best techno language around.
