Koi are great, but make sure your pond is big enough for them. Koi can get VERY large... they easily grow to over12 inches long, even up to 2 feet or more.

Minnows would also work. Minnows and goldfish would get along fine, unless the goldfish get big enough to eat the minnows.

Koi, some kinds of catfish, fancy goldfish, it all depends on the conditions of the pond. Is it going to be heated, will it freeze during the winter or form ice at all? Lots of things to figure out before you can decide on what to get. Koi and Goldfish are the best because they are the most hardy and can take a lot of different and extreme conditions that most other fish cannot. Good luck and good question!!

Just about any variety of fresh water fish, depending on the size of you pond and keeping all things reasonable. Except I would hold back with the "meat-eating" varities, like the peronas for all time. Remember the "James Bond" movie when that was a definite factor against the lead star.

You can have any freshwater fish, but for logistics and maintenance, you will only want vegetarian types of fish. In some places, there are locations where carp gather an you can scoop them out with a fishnet (even better).

I would recommend starting with Gold Fish. They are cheap. This will allow you to work out problems with critters (racoons) and potential problems with water quality.

Once it is established, you can move onto more interesting types of fish.

Koi are popular because they are varied and colorful. There are lots of different varieties of goldfish.

If you are lucky, check the phone book and see if there is a fishery or water plant store nearby.

Almost any member of the carp or catfish family can do well in an outdoor pond. You might also consider small turtles.
