It's a nice ride, though the sanfrancisco to eugene portion of it can be rather crowded. For most part there are not places to plug in a laptop, and there is no wireless, perhaps briefly through some towns, but it never worked for me.
Here would be my suggestion .. book your trip in two parts .... it shouldnt cost too much more.....
1) from san francisco to eugene. That would be on the Coast Starlight, the regular long distance route and coach along the West Coast.
2) from Eugene to Seattle on the Amtrak Cascades, a commuter train that travels between Eugene and Vancouver, BC. The cars are nicer and newer, the seats roomier, and there are electrical outlets for every set of seats! It's not as crowded and its a pleasant trip.

You don't really have much of a choice with rail travel. Amtrak has a monopoly on long-haul passenger train service in the United States. Their trains are notoriously slow and amenities are pretty basic. Although the train is still considerably more comfortable than, say, a Greyhound bus. The Coast Starlight runs from Seattle to Los Angeles via Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco Bay (Emeryville; Oakland; San Jose), and Santa Barbara. Total travel time from one end to the other is roughly 35 hours. All ticketed passengers with "San Francisco" as their port of departure will board the train at Emeryville station (same as arrivals). Amtrak provides a free shuttle bus from this station to various stops in the city center.

I am considering going to Seattle from San Francisco by Train instead of flying. I want to know if anyone has done that?
What's the cost?
How long does it take?
Is that a way you can work in the train with your laptop (Wireless connection?)

Each time a individual feels of San Francisco thinks at a giant Global Orange-coloured link, a park spanning significantly more than 1,000 acres or a city wherever modern art and lifestyle and if you are thinking about this city then this is the place to start hotelbye . One of the things for everything you must visit San Francisco is PIER 39. From remarkable opinions and a sea of sea lions to chowder bread plates and California wines, your stop by at San Francisco starts at PIER 39. This place is probably the most visited location in San Francisco. It provides two quantities of food, leisure, shopping and attractions, all surrounded by unbeatable views of the city and the bay. The problem to go to Oakland from Seattle is that tracks are owned by Union Pacific and they are doing a lot of trackwork and bad train dispatching so the Coast Starlight is ever late.
There is a notice in the website telling that until December 2006 the train can be delayed by UP.
Trip time is 23 h 58 min.
Cost is US$ 131 by coach full fare, but if you purchase in advance US$ 84.
You can go in sleeping car, that it´s expensive but very comfortable. You can work with your laptop but there is no wireless connection as far as I know, you must use a cell phone but in the mountains I think that can be difficult.

It all depends your personal preferences. If you are on a time constraint, and looking for the quickest route, train is not for you. You can take the starlight amtrak which runs along the entire pacific coast, from Seattle to San Diego. You get a nice view of the coastline, and no hassle with airport check-in lines etc. go to amtrak.com and check out the schedules to view trip duration times $ cost, etc.
