I had sex recently for the first time in about a year and a half. (A condom was used, of course.) Intercourse was rather uncomfortable and painful, and I started itching and burning the next day. I started getting an icky discharge and realized that I had a yeast infection. I am using Monistat 3 now and I am on the second day of treatment. This is not the first time this has happened -- he is my fourth sexual partner and I have gotten yeast infections in the past after not having had sex in a while. Am I maybe allergic to the condoms? Is the friction irritating my vagina and causing this? Does this happen to anyone else? Unfortuntely, I can't get in to see my doctor until the end of next month to find out more.

you could be allergic to the latex or the lube on the condom. id try a diff brand or diff type of condom like Lam skin, either that or get on the pill and avoid condoms altogether.

It is not normal to develop a yeast infection after sex but it is not uncommon.

Yeast infections are characterized by a cottage cheese-like discharge caused by the overproduction of Candida albicans or similar species. This yeast is normal in the vagina except when environmental conditions allow for excess growth.

Self treatment of yeast infection symptoms should only occur if you have had diagnosed yeast infections in the past and accurately recognize the symptoms.

Partners often pass yeast between one another during sex which can result in recurring yeast infections in one or both partners. However, because you used a condom, thereby preventing direct contact between you and your partner, it seems likely that the act of intercourse itself is disrupting the normal flora of your vagina rather than a transference of yeast from partner to partner.

This could result from the presence of the latex condom, the lubricant or spermicide on the condom, or simply the introduction of a foreign body into the vagina.

An appointment with your gynecologist is recommended to rule out other underlying conditions and for advice as to prevention of future infections so make sure to schedule your appointment as soon as possible.

Most yeast infections are caused by your partner not recently showering ( I know most people don't but you are supposed to shower before and after to prevent yeast infections) This may not even have anything to do with the sex. It could be from tight clothing. Sometimes you vagina needs to breath which means you should take one day out of the week to be free with no undergarments. Monistat 3 is great for a yeast infection but you should maybe also try to drink some cranberry juice or get some over the counter cranberry pills that you can get at almost every drug store.

A yeast infection can be caused by using antibacterial soap in or even just around the outside of your vagina. Your body has a balance of "friendly" bacteria inside and if it is disturbed the "unfriendly" bacteria can take over causing an infection. It's best (I have found-and I'm 40 years old) to wash with clean water only for the inside and mild soap on the outside.

Make sure before you have sex that you are both clean. A guy can carry yeast on his penis too. Especially if he's not circumcised.

I hope this helps!

Not really. When you get a yeast infection due to sex, it means that there was not enough lubrication down there. With out enough lub., it will hurt and you could possibly damage some tissue in your naughty place. After you are cured from your yeast infection, make sure the next time you have sex, (sorry for sounding nasty) make sure you are well lubricated (wet), if not make sure you use something for easy gliding( some type of lub, exp. KY jelly), so that sex will be comfortable for you.

Good luck to you!

yes it sounds like you may be allergic to the condoms.
Als it could be that after a while the lubrication gets gone and your body is not producing any. Which would cause burning etc.
Next time why don't you add some KY . When it starts to feel unconfortable. I think maybe this will help you

yes, you actually may be allergic to condoms (if scented pads or tampons make you itch) then you are sensitive... I can't use any of that (I dont'get yeast infections, but I break out in an itch, and normally I am pretty ok down there, but have low tolerance for perfumes/rubber)

I agree with bdpayne3...make sure you are wash very well after sex. Also, I wouldn't use too much of that commercial Flavored Lubricant, or whipped cream, or insert anything weird down there, such as fruits or vegetables. lol. I've also heard its very good to pee before and after sex, as it cleans you out down there. If you are doing all this and being clean, but are still getting infections, see your doctor. Have fun and good luck!
