you divide 'what you got' by 'what you coulda got,' and multiply by 100. So in this case, you would divide 157 by 158, times 100, you get 99.37%

Well, I don't give percentages because I think they are arbitrary and really don't communicate the student's ability or understanding. However, it is very simple. You simply divide the amount correct by the amount possible.

So if a test had 158 questions and all of them were worth 1 point, I would divide that amount into the amount of correct questions. So the amount correct, you say 157, divided by the amount possible, 158, and that gives me the percentage grade.

You take how many questions you got right and divide it by the total number of questions.

In your example... you missed one, so that means you got 157 right...Divide 157 by the total of 158 questions

157 / 158 = 0.99

Move the decimal over two spaces to get the percentage ...

99%

Lets say you get all the other 157 questions correct.

So your percentage correct is :
= 157/158 x 100%
= 0.993 x 100%
= 99.3%

If you want to calculate the % Score then it would be

Number of questions correct divided by Total Number of Questions
and multiply by 100.
