Its the difference between liking a team that is good and liking a team that actually wins. Red sox are 1/120 or how many ever years they are in existence....the yanks, umm yeah a lot better than that. So its the jealousy of the Boston fans that throws things off.

Anyone who is into sports knows what it's all about.
It isn't just baseball.Football has huge rivalrys as does hockey.
Look at colleges and high schools. It is everywhere.
But specifically the Red Sox hate us because we have a proven winning record they will never have and we got Babe Ruth many many years ago. They couldn't win after letting us have him.
That is how the curse started and when the hate really started.
There is NO WAY you can possibly like both teams and be a Yankees fan.Not possible!
I respect certain players on a lot of different teams and I respect a team that won't buckle under pressure but I will never like the Red Sox.I don't choose to be a mean person to other fans however.I do not feel it is necessary.I always seem to have to defend myself as a Yankees fan but oh well.If people can dish it out they better be able to take it and not whine about it.
If someone wants to criticize me for being a Yankees fan I will give it right back.I love a good argument about the game and have them often but people do not need to get mean and nasty over it.

In a word, rivalry. I'm not criticizing you but you cannot be a true Yankee fan and like the Red Sox. I'm not a fan of either, I don't really care for baseball, but I understand sports rivalries. Any hardcore rivalry is so deep that you cannont stand the other team. Fans of the following will agree:
Yankees / Red Sox
White Sox / Cubs
Mets / Yankees
Alabama (Roll Tide) / Auburn
Duke / North Carolina
Texas / Texas A&M
These rivalries split families! They are taken seriously.

There has been a rivaly for 90 years (when the Yankees bought Babe Ruth for 30 pieces of silver in 1920). Also, the teams are both good and the cities are near each other. Why the person next to me could be a Yankee trader...err, fan and I don't know it.

Because they're ridiculous and don't realize it's JUST A GAME... yeah, I said it. It's only a game.
They get way too into it and it actually starts to affect how they treat other people. Might be hard to believe, but I know some people who will think less of you if you're a Red Sox fan (I live in NY - lots of Yankee fans here).
Personally, I think they're both great teams and they've got some very talented players.

well it's quite easy. see it's sort of whats happening in the world today everyone is against the u.s.a. out of envy ( they won't admit it though ) but when some one is always on top you either adore them or hate them and well in 86 years boston had won 1 world series while the yankees are the most succesful sports team on the planet ( stats don't lie ) and after ignoring boston fans for so long they finally got to yankee fans and they have shot back understand now ?

This is probably the biggest rivalry in sports, and in Boston we love our Red Sox, so naturally we hate the Yankees because we are rivals.

It's a mystery. Even more puzzling is why New Englanders are proud to be called "Yankees" when they're not Yankee fans.

because the yankees have screwed the red sox in the playoffs a billion times, ever since trading babe ruth. so the red sox are mad at them. and they get into fights ALL THE TIME.
