unfortunately i see no end for rap in sight; good music, well that ship has long left harbor for most of the scene

well, i don't care for rap, so i'll avoid that topic...

anyway, as far as kurt cobain's death, i don't think that's what specifically killed great rock, but i agree w/ you, the trend is pretty hard to ignore. Some bands do continue to put out some decent stuff and all. like R.E.M.'s Around the Sun, not as good as their older stuff but good none the less. also, their lead singer was friends w/ Kurt if I recall correctly. Honestly, the main problem is that tastes have changed for the worse. Also, many good bands have disbanded a long time ago.

No ... neither of the music genres you mentioned "died" when Kurt Cobain or 2Pac died. As someone else touched on in a previous answer, who knows what their music would've become had they continued? It could've gotten better, or it could've gotten worse.

Some say it's better to burn out, than fade away ...

Think about it. They will forever be on a pedestal because they didn't have more of an opportunity to put out a crappy album. It could've happened, but it didn't in their lifetime.

Rock & Rap are still alive & well today, but may just not be to your liking.

obviously this guys right

when kurt died
mtv cancelled beavis and butt-head
stopped playing rock videos
and started shoving worthless music down americas throats

ps, nobody ever said kurt was a god it just so happened that at after his death, mtv just clearly gave up on rock/metal/grunge all together

as for 2pac.

mtv went more downhill and started advertisting even worse bands
reality shows

and nowadays, you dont even see videos anymore

while i think that rap sucks, pre 96 rap and especially 80s rap... will always be better than 50 cent and puff daddy

------

good music exist somewhere out there thesedays, but it is far from mainstream.

Rap yes! And as a huge Nirvana (kurt Cobain) fan i would have to say no! Its hard to live up to what Nirvana did for rock music they are real pioneers but there have been other band out there that still make really good music!

interesting that you would make that argument considering how Cobain killed himself over the internal strife he was experiencing due to his music being so heavily accepted by the mainstream, the very mainstream that his life and musical career were built to rebel against.
you need to look beyond the mainstream to find decent rock now as you have had to since the 70s.
Want a band to blow your mind that you won't find in the top 40? check out Muse's new album: Black Holes and Revelations or the last album by The Mars Volta : Frances the Mute
both released in the last 3 years, both stunning

Cobain's death accelerated the "Grunge" movement; rock had already slid since the 80's.

2Pac's death might have hampered directing "Gangsta" Rap into the mainstream; but, Rap is still going strong, according Billboard.

well..after kurt cobain died, yeah it sucked. It didn't really kill rock, not for the most part anyway. Sure rock did suck after that bu it mostly killed the rock genre of grunge metal. you just can't think of grunge metal without thinking of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. As for 2pac and rap..i don't care because i hate rap anyway.

Kurt Cobain was a very important icon in the world of rock, but when he died, Rock didn't die. We still have rock bands, and they are just different style of rock, I think that the 'Grunge" scene died with him. And Tupac is a true legend, but rap didn't die, it just became different, a new style.

No. Kurt Cobain wasn't even that special. I don't know why people go crazy over him. And 2pac was alright, but definitely not the best. If they would have lived on then maybe that would have "killed" whatever they did. You never know.

Cobain created grunge rock .....as well as ended grunge when he took it back with him to his grave. And thats the end of grunge era. We all do respect him, but rock is not dead, only grunge rock is, alternatives rock bands these days (new wave) see Nirvana as their father band (well not all.....but most), Nirvana was a hugh influcence on rock bands today. (Ever notice most famous recording studio have a hugh poster of nirvana inside? along with you know......the doors, beatles other big names etc.)

For Tupac, well i dont listen to much rap, so i guess i hav to agree with you. After he passed away, rap went straight down to hell, no offense hip-hopers/rappers
