I have a freezer full of milk and I need to donate it before it goes bad. I have searched the net and cannot find anything local. I am in Virginia. Has anybody donated breast milk before? How did it work? Do they come and get it or do I need to take it to them? The websites I did find said something about the doner having to pay a fee for blood tests. Thanks in advance.

All the above answers are *wrong*. To find a milk bank, you need to go to the Web site of their organization. See sources section below.

There's no point in running around looking--a hospital, La Leche League, or breastfeeding Web site may or may not be able to give you the correct information...why do people *bother* answering a question when they don't know?! You do need to undergo blood tests (but *not* genetic testing!!), but all expenses are picked up by the milk bank. Depending on where you live in Virginia, the closest milk bank is in Newark, Delaware or Raleigh, North Carolina.

Many years ago, most large hospitals had milk banks. With the HIV scare, virtually all of them closed, and today, everything is so complicated that there are only a few of them in the entire United States. But they *do* appreciate donations, so check it out!!

Before you even think of donating... have you thawed one of them to see if it kept well? I froze plenty of mine, and when I went to use it, it smelled funny... and tasted funny too. I had them in the proper bags, and still placed them inside another freezer bag... with baking soda to absorb odors. I ended up throwing all of it away.
You'd have to go through a harangue of tests before you could be considered.

Contact the neonatal unit of your local hospital. Contact La Leche League. They can advise you.

well for you to donate is great but you have to pay for like genetic testing and all that plus you have to be responsible for shipping it in dry ice which is very expensive!
