am I to assume they don't recieve many compliments?
This is the guy who sits next to me in my computer class. He helped me with a project, I told him he was awesome and he looked like he would fall out of his chair from shock.

yoiu may be correct in your assumption, many people suffer from low self-esteem,and lack confidence in themselves ,adults too, so don't be surprised if people you encounter are surprised or even shocked by a compliment

Are you attractive? Extremely attractive? You don't have to answer that, but it might make a difference in why he responded to you the way he did. To HIM you might be a dream. If he's in his late teens or early 20's he might still be a little immature at handling attention from a female whose mere glance causes his heart to leap. So if you simply say, "Hey you're awesome," his brain translates it as, "You hunk of computer genius, I want to run my fingers over your keyboard." If you want to know for sure, compliment him again, and with your eyes fixed on his, reach over and gently run your index finger along the keys on his keyboard. If he faints he likes you. Be patient. He'll grow up.

The word awesome should only be used in describing God. No human is worthy.

as has been echoed many times throughout the answers, he most likely is enamored with your presence. Platonically or otherwise.

or...maybe he just doesn't get called "awesome" on a regular basis. i don't think he meant anything rude by his "look". maybe he was just expecting a simple "thank you".
