I just installed Windows Live Messenger (MSN Instant Messenger) and every time I try to sign in, it comes up with:

“Signing into Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Error code 80040111

Can anyone tell me why this is? I have had it installed now for about a week and no matter when I try to sign in, it always comes up with this. What do I need to do to get this to work?

Try uninstalling Windows Messenger and reinstalling it. I've had the same problem and 90% of the time this will fix it.

Also, check if you have older versions of windows messenger. This might be conflicting with the newer version. Usually, the operating system INCLUDES it's own version of Windows Messenger. You can try to uninstall that one and install the newer version provided at the link below. But I strongly suggest try uninstalling/ reinstalling first for that will fix most of the errors.

Hope that helps! If you have any questions, feel free to message me and I will be happy to assist you.

It did the same thing to me.... Reinstall until it works. Windows Live Messenger is just a beta test. That means that we're using it to work out all the bugs (like that one). Once they've been ironed out, they'll release the "real" one
