I don't generally drink enough to get drunk. I just like a glass or two of wine or a rum and coke. I'm just worried because my dad is an alcoholic and I'm afraid I'm starting to act like him.

I recently quit smoking, so I'm wondering if this is my substitute for it.

Well I can tell you I am sure this is how so many alcoholics start, I would be very careful.. One way to tell is go a whole week without one swallow of alcohol and see how you feel. See if you really crave it or if you could be without it. If you crave it get help now, if not don't drink eventually you will need it.

Having a glass or two of wine, or a couple of drinks every evening doesn't make anybody an alcoholic. It's when you set out to have one or two and then can't remember anything about the rest of the evening because you wound up having eight or twelve.

What you need to watch out for is your being predisposed to alcoholism because of your father. There really is a link. Also, alcoholics don't start out drinking themselves into oblivion every night. They begin slowly, drinking just enough to get a light buzz, just enough to lift their spirits. Every alcoholic I've ever heard talk about there drinking careers, myself included, regret losing the ability to drink just enough to feel good. Alcoholism is a progressive disease, and it's sneaky. Be very careful.

If, you father is an alcoholic you have a 50% chance of becoming one. It's good that you have some red flags going up about your drinking habits. If you stick to the 2 drinks minimum, your body will get use to this amount and eventually you'll need to increase the drinks to get the same buzz.
But why do you need to have a couple of drinks to relax?!
Try exercising, this will give you a natural endorphin high.
The question is, as someone mentioned can you stop when you want to?

Absolutely not. I have asked myself the same question. I too have a dad that is an alcoholic and it would concern me that i may end up like him....The mere fact that you show concern of this and are aware of this says that you are not. You don't drink to get drunk, right? just to relax a little. I too have 1 or 2 glasses of wine when I get home. i don't get drunk, just relax. That is perfectly ok and you are ok.

One or two drinks for some one who weighs less than 100lbs is enough to get a buzz on. A glass of wine or a beer or a cocktail every day is said to be healthy. As long as you can keep it to one or two you are not abusiing it. The question is can you do without it for a week and not feel a sense of loss. Try lemonade or sparkling cider or something for a week. If you can do it, you're OK.

Here is a test. Stop drinking for a month. Not one drop.

How did you feel? Did you cheat? Did you take your first drink after the month was up like a man dying of thirst in the desert?

This will convince you more than anything I could possibly say on the matter.

If you can't even bring yourself to do this or you find yourself dismissing it out of hand as stupid.....there's your answer right there.

Did you find it not so enjoyable the first two times, and then really begin to enjoy it the third time? Do you think you can quit anytime you want, but then find an excuse to drink anyway (ie. it's only a little bit, I'm not getting drunk). Have you tried to stop, but then found yourself stuck in the drinking rut again?

Might be time to look into help before it gets any harder.

I depends on how you feel about those drinks.. Do you feel that you need them? That you deserve them? Do you get irritable if you can't have them? Do you make excuses for having them? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then you are probably well on your way to becoming an alcoholic. If you answered no then you probably aren't but you should be very careful.
