I assume that you are speaking of such fields in Asia. It is likely that the fields are shaped as such to fit into whatever level space is available.

If they're in rows, the water can drain away. The geometric forms are closed.

I have seen a few in square fields that are certainly in rows. I do know what you mean though, sometimes it seems like they are trying to make designs... but in reality I think mostly the strange shapes are simply because of the terrain.

Some are in geometric forms becouse of a taboo that many farmers have in Japan about Karma.

I think it has something to do with them being on hills and what shapes wil fit on the hill.
