what are your views on animal testing? i think its pretty much inevitable that one with a science background will perform experiments, tests or dissections on animals to make discoveries. but i have a lovely hamster, and i cant imagine testing anything on him or other rodents. but do you think its ok to test because of the breakthroughs that could save lives or definitely not?

I think it comes down to (in regards to finding amazing medical breakthrus via animal testing), are you willing to kill a life to save your own or possibly anothers?
That's just my suggestion on how to view the question if it's moral or not.

But then again, call me a 'hippie' or just a crazy PETA "groupie" - I honestly think any animal testing is wrong and as inevitable as it may be, I wish it would end.

I don't think any thinking person advocates nedless animal testing or animal cruelty. The question is at what point must we use animal testing?
For myself that bar would be at when chemicals or processes have unknown (or unproven) results. Known results (the effects of cosmetics with age old ingredients, for example) need not pro reproven because there is no doubt as to their effect.

I use animal testing for my research. I hate doing it. I constantly wrestle with the problem of whether my research is important enough to warrant taking lives like this, even if I am doing it humanely.

I think that's what it comes down to--whether ethically you weigh animals' lives of such importance that it precludes their sacrifice to science, or whether you weigh the advancement of knowledge and applied medicine as more important. Good luck finding a clear answer.

I don't condone the testing done by cosmetics firms, or testing done for quasi-medical purposes, but if testing on animlas might help save the lives of humans or other animals, I would support it, but I would like to see it done as humanely as possible.
