That's a very tough question. Games throughout history have changed from culture to culture and era to era, however, Chess is the longest running game that has not changed. It derives from the game Xiangqi ( also known as Chinese chess) created in 2ND century B.C. It was brought to India in the 3rd century A.D. and was called Chaturanga. In The 6th century, Persians refined the game and called it Chatrang. When it spread to western Europe it became chess.

the game of wei qi (or go in other countries) was invented in china and is the oldest known board game in history, it's about 4000 years old
ps. what icon says is not true, I'm talking about the how old chess is. Go is older BY FAR, while chess ha varyed in many ways concerning rules and such, Go has the same exact rules as it had 4000 years ago

I would have to say Go, Backgammon, or Senet. I recall reading an article last year about archaeologists recently unearthing ancient Backgammon boards in Mesopotamia.

Heads or Tails has to be quite old... they probably originally used flat river rocks or seashells tens of thousands of years ago to decide who was going on the hunt. :P

I would think it might have been tag or hide and seek. Great when we were all hunter/gatherers
