Google’s Page Creator is a popular hit for creating your Web page.

To access this new feature, you must have a Gmail account (Google’s free e-mail). There is a link on the Page Creator page for Gmail.

When you create your site, it will be hosted by Google. You will have an address that includes your Gmail. You can get more information at:

Creating a Web page

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the language that your Internet browser reads to show you the Web.

A Using Word: After creating a Word document, click File, Save As. In the Save As dialogue box, click the down arrow in the Save as type drop-down list box (near the bottom of the dialogue box) and select ‘Web Page’ from the menu. You will then get the option to title the page. Your Web page should display just as it does in Word.

To put your Web site onto the Internet, you will need server space. A server is a specialized computer devoted to putting pages on the Web. Most Internet service providers such space—check with your service provider to learn how to utilize it.

B Macromedia's Dreamweaver ($399) creates professional pages, but it can be tricky to learn. http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver ).

C Adobe’s GoLive ($399) offers a free 30-day trial.

D Microsoft's FrontPage ($199) is not for all Web hosts. Be sure that before you sign up with a host to post a Web page, find out how the Web host handles FrontPage.

E There are Web sites that offer HTML tutorials and templates. Here are a few:

www.w3schools.com/html
www.htmlgoodies.com
www.webdesign.org
www.nvu.com

To learn more about Web technologies, visit the W3C’s Web site. W3Schools has free tutorials that are clearly written with step-by-step instructions. It also has a tool that will make sure your pages meet HTML standards.

Remember to keep your site user friendly—make sure it is easy to navigate.

Privacy and security are a major concern. Spammers use automated spam collector programs to search the Web to find and retrieve e-mail addresses. Consider placing your e-mail address inside a graphic; or displaying your address in the format ‘name at website dot com’ instead of ‘name@website.com.’

Most major search sites (like Google) let you restrict their access with a robots.txt file. This allows you to restrict your whole site or just select pages. To learn how to use the file, visit robotstxt.org (http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/robots.html).

Keep private and identifying information off your site.

Hey, I'm taking a class about the Internet in schools, and one thing I have to do is make a webpage. No, I won't make one for your class because I have to do my own, but... we've been given some websites that help in this, so maybe if you check them out you can do it on your own. It doesnt' cost anything! Some of the guides you can download and print out.
