You know how long it took for people to finally ditch cassette tapes and buy CD's, or how long it took to move from VHS to DVD. It's the same thing here.

Unfortunately, changing your internet service provider seems like hell to go through to many people, especially older folk. I know a lot of people that are still paying $20 or more for AOL or another dial-up provider, even though DSL is available in their area at a lower price. Some people are just too frickin' timid to make the move.

AOL is hanging on by a thread in my opinion, although they still have a lot of subscribers. It's still in the early stages for broadband, but once it becomes clear how easy the change really is, people will roll over hitting AOL like a tidal wave. That's why I think there's only a "thread" left ...

Yes, millions of people.

Do you mean AOL as a service provider? They have lots of subscribers. People don't want to lose their email addresses. Some people just don't want to bother with signing up with another provider.

Regarding other services, AOL's instant messenger program (AIM) is one of the most popular IM utilities out there.

I try to discourage people. The founders are huge bigots, they don't own it any more, but they still make a ton of dough from it.
