is it common that you would have to pay your own way on short notice for interviews? Just wondering. I have until tomorrow to decide if I want to go to Boulder for an interview with a start up company.

I am interviewing for salaried positions (underwriting, account management, etc) - they are not paying. Many different states, many different companies. They arent paying. Is this normal? New Trend? Should I ask?

Unfortunately there are so many people applying for jobs these days that employers have a large selections of applicants and if one or two are out of state and wont come....oh well.... there are plenty of others willing to interview. It use to be they would pay and could write off the expenses but these days unless you are upper level mgt. or have some rare and valuable skill they wont do it. Is it fair, no not to the applicant. But if you owned a business would you pay to ship someone in if you didnt have to?!?! I am guessing not.
I went to Boulder last month for an interview, I was one of three left in the interview process so I figured it was worth the investment to go out, cost me over a grand in travel expenses, and I didnt get it. Those are the breaks.
Good luck to you, I hope you get it!!!!

They only gave you one day to decide???

How far are you from Boulder? Could you drive there in a few hours or would you need to fly? If it is a few hours drive, I don't think it unreasonable. If you need to pay for a full fare airline ticket, that can cost some real money.

No. Usually companies will pay your travel to interview for a job; depending on the type of job, of course. I was flown from Austin TX to California once for a job interview. I got the job and they also paid for my relocation.

I now drive a truck and my company flew me to Tacoma WA for orientation (I had a phone interview) and they paid for the motel, most of the meals, and orientation itself.

Have you asked if the company will reimburse the travel expenses?

If it is a start up, have you closely looked into the work, training, etc backgrounds of your potential employers?

Ask yourself about the next step. If you do get the job, will they help with relocation?

It is common for the person being interviewed to pay all their own expenses, unfortunately. Do they expect you to go there tomorrow? I would remind them you have to book a flight or whatever and maybe need a little extra time, especially since this is the height of summer travel. But, before doing that, make sure this is what you want, search your heart and your head before you plunk down the $$ for the trip.

No way! It's one thing for you to pay up front and they reimburse you, but no way you should not have to incur those costs. Unless you are an independent consultant and can write off the expense I wouldn't do it. The job market is hot right now, there's no reason for you to be out cash for an interview. That company is lame!

Depending on the position (engineering, clerical, etc) the company will pay for your travel. If it is a salaried position, they will pay.
