You have clogged EGR ports underneath the throttle body. Remove the throttle body, and the rounded 90 degree snorkel that attaches it to the intake manifold. I guarantee underneath you will find the EGR channels in the upper intake to be completely clogged with carbon. Pick out all this carbon buildup and clean with some 2+2 cleaner and reinstall. Your problem will be solved. A Ford dealership mechanic with experience will know exactly what to look for, a common problem on the 4.6 liter V8, at high mileage.

Ok p0401 and won't go off... Hum.. there is something wrong... and here it is..

tell mechanic to look in his TSB's from his manual supplier.. if not call the Ford Dealer.... (Most independants don't know about the TSB I'm gonna tell you about)

There was a TSB in the late 1990s dealing with having to remove the upper intake throttle body and upper intake (the part that goes from the throttle body to the intake.. there are 4 bolts right above where the EGR is)... You have to take that off and clean the passage way that the EGR gases flow from the EGR itself to the intake.. all 3 access holes at the intake hole are plugged.. that will solve the p0401

Don't have my book handy for the TSB however... So will take some research, but a Ford Dealer parts guy or mechanic with over about 5-10 years experience should know about it

Of course there's not, that's why computers should not be in cars. 5.0 right? It will last forever...don't worry about it. Could also be the o2 sensor or maybe the plentum needs to be cleaned and the components flushed out like the TPS. Good luck. Drive it anyway.
