Zone Alarm has a great product with a firewall, virus and spyware protection. Best of all, there is a basic version available for free.
I've used it for two years now and have not had a single problem with viruses, pop-ups, banner ads, or unwanted cookies. I've been very pleased.

AVG is the best free anti virus.
Microsoft Defender is the very best anti spyware. My girls downloaded one of those things from Screensaver.com that infects your computer with two very bad ones. I tried getting rid of them using several spyware tools but could not delete them until I got the new MS Defender.
