Recent evidence implicates SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), an ingredient found in almost all toothpastes, may be responsible for the formation of canker sores. Dental researchers in the US and Norway have found that 4 out of 5 canker sore sufferers get significant reduction in canker sores by simply switching to a toothpaste which is free of SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate).
Unfortunately, 99% of all toothpastes contain canker sore promoting SLS. Only six toothpastes on the market do not. After extensive comparisons and tests, the SLS free toothpaste we rated best was Squigle Enamel Saver toothpaste.
This toothpaste is superior for three reasons:
It contains absolutely no SLS
It utilizes a patented foaming system which strengthens the oral mucosa, making your mouth even more resistant to canker sores.
It tastes like conventional toothpastes unlike other SLS-free toothpastes which have a "chalky", unpleasant taste.

My dentist told me to do each the following:
-Apply "Abreva" to the canker sore
-Take Lysine twice a day (you can find it in the vitamin section and it reduces the acid in your system. Acid helps cause caker sores)
-Mix equal parts of liquid benadryl and phillips milk of magnesia. Use this as a mouth rinse every 2-3 hours. It's really gross, but it works.
-Stop drinking pop until the canker sore is gone. This is because Pop is very acidic.
Good luck... I hope you feel better. Canker Sores really hurt.

Take some vitamin C. Canker sores will usually develop when you're deficient in vitamin C.

I heard somewhere and have tried with my step-daughter that you mix...
Mylanta (2 Tbsp) and 1/2 tsp of Benadryl and swish with it. Don't swallow it. The Mylanta numbs the sore and the benadryl is supposed to help it heal. I'm not sure if it really helped heal it, but it sure numbed it well. She only swished with it twice a day.

Listerine works good. Also one thing that works for some people is to gargle with the hottest coffee or water that you can stand. It seems to help them heal faster.

oxygel, I think that's what it's called. It's an over-the-counter remedy that works in like 2 days. I used to get them when I had braces, so I know exactly how you feel, it's annoying isn't it.
