Uncle Sam is a character who is recognized as a symbol for the United States government. He is often portrayed as a tall lanky man wearing striped pants and a top hat. Uncle Sam first appeared in cartoons in New England newspapers around 1820. And for over one-hundred forty years he was believed by most people to be a purely mythical character.
However, in 1961 a researcher by the name of Thomas Gersen discovered an 1830 newspaper article which revealed that Uncle Sam was actually a real person, one Samuel Wilson, a meat packer and politician from upstate New York. Mr. Wilson was affectionately known by the people in his home town as Uncle Sam because of his jovial manner and fair business practices.
The Uncle Sam character seems to have gotten its start because Samuel Wilson had the peculiar habit of stamping "U.S." on the barrels of meat that were to be shipped to the United States military. This was in the days before "U.S." was a commonly used abbreviation for the country. One day one of his employees joked to a government inspector that the "U.S." on the barrels actually stood for "Uncle Sam". That tongue in cheek comment was often repeated thereafter and has now lasted for nearly two hundred years.
Strangely enough, Samuel Wilson was boyhood friends with another 19th century American icon named John Chapman. But you would probably know his friend better by another name: Johnny Appleseed.

The man who sticks it to us. j/k He is actually the national personification of the US. There are a few different theories on how the nickname came about. One is that it originated from the Irish Gaelic term SAM, which translates into USA.
