There is an abundance of oil-shale in the Green River Basin, in parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. High estimates predict the potential oil yield to be greater than that of Saudi Arabia. The problem is that the Green River Basin is an important archaeological site, as well as environmentally sensitive. Extracting oil form oil-shale, with current day practices, is intrusive ecologically. I'm no expert on this, but I believe it would require open pit mining, to remove the oil shale prior to extracting the oil by another process (heating the oil shale until the oil oozes out) or confining the process to on site which may have ground water implications.
And let's face it, if the tree huggers and soccer moms wouldn't let us drill in Alaska (far away), what are the chances of doing it here in the mainland? God forbid we rid ourselves of middle eastern oil and put these terrorists out of business, not if it means cutting down some trees.

yes, in colorado, wyoming, and montana, we have two trillion barrels of oil in shale. it costs $45 a barrel to produce, and the reason we are not producing it yet is because the oil companies know that by the time they spend a billion dollars gearing up, crude oil prices will be back below $40 a barrel

There is oil in many western states, but I don't know that I would call it an abundance.

There is a lot of drilling going on up there right now. With the gas prices going up so high, American oil companies are really getting after it right now.

There is a huge deposit of oil shale in Colorado, but it's never been exploited.

We can only hope. Would love to see your sources on this. I guess I will have to go on a Yahoo search for some news on it. Thanks for the heads up.
By the way, I have not heard a word on it, and I thought you were out of your gourd until I read some of the answers.
